Megan is an "All-American Girl". She is a cheerleader and has a boyfriend, but she doesn't really like to kiss him, and she has pictures of women in her locker. Her parents and friends come to the conclusion that she must be a lesbian, and they send her to a "rehabilitation school" for homosexual and lesbian youth. Megan never thought of herself as a lesbian, but a camp full of attractive girls makes her think.
With BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER, director Jamie Babbit wanted to make a "gay Clueless". Using the cheerleader, a stereotype of American femininity, gender roles and heteronormativity are comically exposed. It's not very surprising that the film has become a real queer cult classic in recent years.
