Paris in the early summer of the 1960s: we follow the famous French singer Cléo (Corinne Marchand) from 5 to 7 o'clock. She wanders through the streets while waiting for the results of her cancer test. Cléo consults a fortune teller, goes shopping, meets her lover, drinks coffee in a busy Parisian café, ... and thus counts the hours until she finally receives the news.
Cléo from 5 to 7, with its handheld long takes in outdoor locations, stands as one of the pillars of the 'Nouvelle Vague' and showcases the mastery of the iconic director Agnès Varda. Her innovative female perspective, as a response to the prevailing 'male gaze,' is reflected in the symbolism of mirrors throughout the film. Although the term 'female gaze' did not exist at the time of the film, Varda laid the foundation for this groundbreaking cinematic language. This classic is a brilliant time capsule that still feels fresh and energetic today.
Cléo de 5 à 7 is one of the SUMMER SPECIALS at De Uitkijk, showing in June, July, and August of 2024.
