Concerning Violence (2014)
CONCERNING VIOLENCE will be introduced on 4 May, Remembrance Day, by Dr Kevin D. Pham, lecturer in political theory. His research focuses on ideas about democracy, freedom and revolution, and how these spread and are reinvented around the world. He concentrates on thinkers who are active in political struggle, both within and outside ‘the West’.
‘Decolonisation is always a violent phenomenon,’ wrote Frantz Fanon in 1961. More than sixty years later, his writings continue to shape our understanding of (de)colonial dynamics.
Using impressive archive material, collected by director Olsson, CONCERNING VIOLENCE (2014) reveals the harsh reality of colonial societies. Shocking images of African liberation movements in Zimbabwe, Guinea, Mozambique, Congo and South Africa flash before our eyes.
CONCERNING VIOLENCE is based on Fanon’s writings, read aloud by Lauryn Hill. His psychoanalytical perspective on colonialism and the violence it engenders remains disturbingly relevant.
