This film is part of our BODIES OF WATER series, screening in May and June at De Uitkijk.
Intering the world of cinema, Varda (Cléo from 5 to 7, Le Bonheur) returned to La Pointe Courte, the place where she grew up. This small Mediterranean fishing village, with its ever-present waters, serves not only as a beautiful setting but also as a meaningful backdrop for two intertwining storylines — each with its own style and themes: neo-realist depictions of daily life in the village alternate with a stylized portrayal of a couple on the brink of marital collapse.
The beautifully shot debut by then 25-year-old Agnès Varda is considered one of the precursors to the French New Wave. La Pointe Courte marked the beginning of a film career that would span over sixty years, during which Varda became one of the most important and unconventional figures in French film history. The film was edited by Alain Resnais (Hiroshima Mon Amour).
