The Gleaners and I (Les glaneurs et la glaneuse) is one of Agnès Varda’s best-known documentaries. The film sparked widespread discussion at the time of its release and has come to be seen as Varda’s signature work. In The Gleaners and I, Agnès Varda encounters "gleaners" all across France — people who collect, gather, and reuse what others leave behind. They do so out of necessity, by chance, or as a conscious lifestyle choice: living off the leftovers of others to combat waste.
In the documentary, Varda weaves together different worlds: those of the traditional gleaners from earlier times, and her own — as she also finds, gathers, and reuses images and stories.
The Gleaners and I was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. The documentary is one of four titles returning to cinemas as part of The Gaze of Varda program.
