Saxophonist Fred Madison is mysteriously accused of murdering his wife Renée. While awaiting execution in prison, he inexplicably undergoes a metamorphosis and transforms into a young man named Pete Dayton, who leads a completely different life. When Pete is released, his path crosses with Fred's in a surreal, suspenseful web of intrigue orchestrated by a shady gangster boss named Dick Laurent.
