Tapis Rouge Classiques returns to De Uitkijk with Plein Soleil. The film includes English subtitles and will be introduced by Pierre-Pascal Bruneau, founder and chairman of Stichting L'Echappée and Tapis Rouge.
In honor of the film’s 65th anniversary and one year after the passing of Alain Delon, Plein Soleil returns in a stunning 4K restoration, once again proving why this stylish thriller ranks among the classics of French cinema.
Directed by René Clément, this 1960 adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley introduced audiences to Delon in a career-defining role as the enigmatic Tom Ripley—a man whose charm and cunning mask a chilling amorality. Set against the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy, where shimmering blue waters and golden light conceal a current of deceit, the film’s captivating blend of psychological tension, elegant cinematography, and Nino Rota’s evocative score creates an atmosphere of both beauty and looming dread.
Plein Soleil is a profound study of deception and desire and remains a landmark work in European thrillers, influencing generations of filmmakers with its stylized, sultry approach to suspense. Over sixty years later, the film’s hypnotic allure and moral ambiguity remain as compelling as ever.
