Simulacrum: Touki Bouki (1973)
Simulacrum Magazine is celebrating the latest issue, DRIFTING, at De Uitkijk with a screening of Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki (1973). The Senegalese arthouse classic follows the young lovers Anta (Myriam Niang) and Mory (Magaye Niang) on their motorbike adorned with a bull’s horn. The final destination of their doomed road trip? Off to France, off to freedom! In a dizzying blend of the French New Wave and West African stylistic influences, Touki Bouki explores the poetic, political, and personal dimensions of ‘drifting’. Simulacrum will introduce the film and pose the question: what historical and cultural baggage do Anta and Bary carry with them on their journey?
