Uitkijk x Simulacrum: Videodrome (1983)
Simulacrum Magazine celebrates the upcoming issue MOTHERBOARD at De Uitkijk with a screening of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome (1983). Television programmer Max Renn (James Woods) seeks only to give the people what they want: ever grimier, schlockier, more provocative broadcasts. Looking to peddle the next big thing in trash TV, he is introduced to Videodrome, a snuff channel of unstaged, eroticised torture and execution. This encounter triggers a hallucinatory spiral into obsession, where body and mind increasingly coagulate with the workings of the machine. Our machines may have changed their skins, but the film remains confrontationally prophetic in examining our bodily and psychological intimacy with technology. Starring the inimitable Debbie Harry as the seductive Nina Brand, Videodrome is Cronenberg at his freakiest.
