Wednesday evening, 4 June, Simulacrum invites you to the launch event of its issue on Hunting, organised in collaboration with Filmtheater De Uitkijk. One of the contributors will read their piece, followed by a screening of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, a western-meets-space-opera-
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001) is a feature-length anime film based on the popular 1998 series Cowboy Bebop. It was produced in the wake of the show's international success, mostly by the same team, including director ShinichirÅ Watanabe, writer Keiko Nobumoto, character designer/animation director Toshihiro Kawamoto and composer Yoko Kanno.
Set between episodes 22 and 23 of the series, the film follows the Bebop crew as they investigate a bioterrorist threat on Mars (which is now a fully populated planet), while hunting down a former soldier haunted by war trauma. With its implicated bounty hunter protagonist in a futurist cityscape, the movie retools aesthetics of noir to explore post-9/11 anxieties (despite being completed just before the attacks), particularly the fear of invisible enemies, state surveillance, and the psychic scars of war.
