This film is part of our BODIES OF WATER series, screening in May and June at De Uitkijk.
Unlikely cosmic phenomena — supernova explosions, disruptions in celestial alignments, meteorites bearing mysterious inscriptions — coincide with the arrival of transfer student Izumi. A gifted diver, Izumi is left changed after a diving accident. As the city languishes under a persistent drought and unexplainable events unfold, fellow student Mao joins the recovering Izumi — now awakened to a heightened state of awareness — in a quest to uncover the source of this cosmic imbalance.
Over the course of 117 magical minutes, the film effortlessly immerses you in its hallucinatory logic. The images, sounds, and textures come together like a hazy dream, in which themes of love, melancholy, and the cosmos intertwine. From beginning to end, the element of water — both in its presence and absence — remains at the heart of the film.
