This film is part of the second installment of our summer series CINEMATES, which focuses on films about friendship.
A thoughtful, honest portrait of the complexity and contradictions of female friendship.
New York, 1970s. Susan, a kind and aspiring photographer, shares a small apartment with her best friend Anne. But when Anne suddenly leaves to move in with her new husband, Susan is left somewhat adrift—faced with double the rent and a gaping hole in her social life. In the aftermath of this abrupt loss, she tries to make ends meet by photographing bar mitzvahs on the Upper West Side, while struggling to regain control over the direction of her life.
Claudia Weill was ahead of her time in the way she depicted female friendship on screen, and her film went on to inspire generations of filmmakers. With wry humor and fresh honesty, she created a tender, intimate story about female love, lives, and friendships in 1970s New York.
