Alexandre is a young, idle dilettante. He lives with Marie, his mistress, and loiters around Saint-Germain-des-Prés. One day he meets Veronika, a young nurse. He begins an affair with her, without leaving Marie…
The film explores the relationships between three characters in a love triangle and was Eustache’s first feature film, widely regarded as his masterpiece. He wrote the screenplay based on his own relationships and shot the film between May and July 1972. The film was screened at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix. Although initial critical reactions were mixed, the film was later embraced by critics and filmmakers.
