Over time, dozens of cinemas have appeared and disappeared in Amsterdam, but Filmtheater De Uitkijk still exists! The illustrious history of the building at Prinsengracht 452 began in 1912 when the 17th-century warehouse was transformed into the City Bioscoop. When the famous Filmliga took over the cinema in 1929, it became Filmtheater De Uitkijk, the first avant-garde film theater ever in the Netherlands. Since 2007, De Uitkijk has been a sister project of the Kriterion foundation and has been run in a non-hierarchical manner by a dozen students. A historic cinema led by a young, progressive organization!
The aim of our quirky film theater remains to maintain a classic film culture while also being innovative. We bring together past and present, young and old within the walls of our building.
