Osaka, 1955. Based on the novel of the same name by Teru Miyamoto, this film follows the everyday life of nine-year-old Nobuo in postwar Japan.
Nobuo is the son of a war veteran who, together with his wife, runs a small restaurant on the right bank of the Tosabori River. He spends his days in boredom—until one day he notices a houseboat has docked on the opposite shore. Curious, he meets the boat’s inhabitants—including a boy his own age named Kiichi, who leads a life full of unfamiliar adventure. The two quickly form a unique and touching bond.
