Orpheus is the Sunday evening classic of September and can be seen every Sunday of the month at 9:00 PM.
The legend of Orpheus is well known. In Greek mythology, Orpheus was a troubadour from Thrace. Death took his wife Eurydice away from him. He descended into the underworld and used his charm to obtain permission to return with Eurydice to the world of the living, on the condition that he would never look at her. But he looked at her, and was torn apart by the Bacchantes.
Jean Cocteau took Greek mythology, bathed it in shadows, and let poetry flow from it. A surreal love affair with death; infused with captivating dialogues, surreal sequences, and intriguing ideas—each explored with grace and mastery.
The effects of the film remain timeless. Orpheus is Cocteau at his very best, a dark tale told with a childlike sense of wonder and a refined eye for tragedy.
