Celebrate Mother’s Day at De Uitkijk with a touch of magic: bring your mother figure along for free as your +1 to the moving film Petite Maman. An intimate cinematic gift for someone who matters – a small gesture with big meaning.
After Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, Céline Sciamma returns with Petite Maman, a film in which the director goes back to her roots with a tender coming-of-age story that blurs the boundaries between past and present.
Following the death of her grandmother, eight-year-old Nelly explores the house and surroundings where her mother grew up. In the nearby woods, she meets another young girl. Slowly, it becomes clear that Nelly knows her – but who is she, really? As Nelly uncovers that her mother was once a child too, she begins to understand who her mother truly is.
Sciamma made Petite Maman during the 2020 lockdown, resulting in an intimate and quietly captivating story. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Bear. “What a superb movie – a jewel of this year’s Berlin film festival,” wrote The Guardian, awarding it five stars.
