Fargo (1996)

Tragicomic masterpiece by the Coen brothers in which Jerry (Macy) has his own wife kidnapped because he needs money for a business deal. The wicked little scheme fails miserably, thanks to the criminals' bungling on one hand and the exceptional sleuthing instincts of the heavily pregnant police chief Marge (McDormand) on the other. Showered with awards worldwide, including a thoroughly deserved Oscar for McDormand. In 2014, a somewhat less enjoyable TV series of the same name appeared, with different actors and the Coens as producers.
