Metaal en Melancholie (1993)
9 to 59 TO 5, the ‘Uitkijk’ series for May and June, is all about rolling up your sleeves: work, whether fair or not, whether clean or not…
Twenty years after leaving, filmmaker Heddy Honigmann returns to her birthplace, Lima, where many residents are trying to make a bit of extra money as taxi drivers due to the poor economic climate. Honigmann documents her return amidst the interiors of ramshackle taxis, where the owners candidly tell her about their lives. She unearths stories that are characteristic of the Peruvian zeitgeist in the early 1990s.
METAL AND MELANCHOLY is an unconventional road movie that takes the viewer on a taxi ride through the streets of Lima, telling of the many ways to survive and the passion and zest for life that underpin them.
