The Servant (1963)
9 to 59 TO 5, the ‘Uitkijk’ series for May and June, is all about rolling up your sleeves: work, whether fair or not, whether clean or not…
Tony, a lazy London aristocrat, hires the capable Barrett as a butler for his new home. Barrett is somewhat emotionally reserved, but extremely attentive. However, when Barrett persuades his employer to let his sister move in, the dynamic between the two men begins to shift slowly.
THE SERVANT is a penetrating portrait of manipulation and class struggle. The performances of the three lead actors, combined with Pinter’s cynical pen and Douglas Slocombe’s masterful black-and-white cinematography, make the film a timeless masterpiece.
